"Re-live" the royal experience of the Maharajas of Rajasthan by journeying on the Palace On Wheels luxury train. The passenger coaches were originally built for use by the rulers of the princely states of Rajputana, Gujarat, the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Viceroy of British India. Since 1996 the Palace on Wheels has been running on broad gauge track and boasts 14 Saloons, designed to reflect the aesthetics of the former royal states of Rajasthan. Each luxurious cabin has wall to wall carpeting, and there is a well stocked bar, two dining cars (The Maharaja and Maharani) and on board service is first class. Over the last 20 years the Palace on Wheels has been rated one of the best ten luxurious rail journeys in the world.

ITINERARY

Day 1 – New Delhi

This rail journey of a lifetime begins at the Delhi Safdarjung Railway station where guests are enjoy a warm, traditional welcome before the Palace On Wheels pulls out into the night for a week-long luxury cruise through fascinating Rajasthan.

Day 2 – Jaipur

Breakfast is served on-board before a royal elephant welcome at Jaipur Railway Station. Visit St. Albert Museum, Pink City Palace & UNESCO World Heritage Site of Jantar Mantar (sun observatory).

There will be a brief photo stop at Hawa Mahal before continuing to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hill Fort Palace of Amber. Enjoy an elephant ride up the steep ramparts of the Fort. Lunch is held in the 1135 AD Boutique Restaurant, located in the Fort. Later discover the beauty of the 16th century Fort Palace. There will be time for shopping in the vibrant local market before returning to the train for dinner and overnight.

Day 3 – Ranthambore and Chittorgarh

Early morning safari in 15-seater canters. Ranthambore Tiger Reserve is one of the most popular reserves in India with a rich history and is home to Tigers, Panthers, Sloth Bears, Pythons, Marsh Crocodiles, Deer and numerous birds, truly a delight for wildlife lovers. Return to the train mid morning and continue to Chittorgarh. Lunch will be served onboard. Arrive Chittorgarh late afternoon and visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hill Fort of Chittorgarh, spread over a huge plateau - with history dating back to 11th century. It is considered to be the largest Fort in India. Enjoy an evening Sound & Light program in the fort complex before returning to the train for dinner and overnight.

Day 4 – Udaipur

Morning arrival in Udaipur. Visit the City Palace complex and Crystal Gallery. Later enjoy a boat ride around the world famous "Lake Palace Hotel" in the middle of Lake Pichola. Lunch is held at the majestic Fatehprakash Palace Hotel. Later there will be time for shopping followed by a visit to the Royal Gardens at Saheliyon Ki Bari. Return to train for dinner and overnight.

Day 5 – Jaisalmer

After onboard Breakfast proceed to UNESCO World Heritage Site of Jaisalmer Fort. Enjoy a leisurely walk through the 15th century Fort complex before continuing to Patwon ki Haveli, one of the largest and most elaborate mansions. Have lunch at a 5-Star Hotel before returning to the train for a brief rest and tea. Late afternoon excursion to Sam Sand Dunes in the Thar Desert for camel rides at sunset. Later enjoy traditional show & dinner at a 5-Star Hotel. Return to the train for overnight and proceed to Jodhpur.

Day 6 – Jodhpur

Morning visit to the 16th century Mehrangarh Fort. Once past the Fort gates, you have access to breathtaking Palatial Apartments (Mahal), overlooking wide courtyards. Inside the fort complex is a museum which houses an impressive collection of royal dresses & medieval weapons. Later visit the museum at Umaid Bhawan Palace, displaying personal artifacts of H.H. Maharaja of Jodhpur. Lunch is served at Hanwant Mahal Boutique Restaurant. Return to the train for dinner and overnight.

Day 7 – Bharatpur & Agra

Early morning departure to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. Enjoy a rickshaw ride to view many of the 375 species of both local & migratory birds (from places like Sri-Lanka, Europe, Siberia, China and Tibet). Return to the train for breakfast and continue to Agra. The sightseeing begins with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Agra Fort, the seat of power of the once mighty Mughal Empire. Lunch at ITC Mughal Hotel is followed by a visit to the majestic Taj Mahal. There will be time for shopping before returning to the train for dinner and overnight. Proceed to Delhi.

Day 8 – Delhi

Breakfast will be served on board. Tour ends at Delhi.
