Series 2, Episode 2 Great Continental Railway Journeys. In this Great Continental Railway Journey you get a real taste of Northern Italy as you follow Portillo's rail journey from Turin to Venice enjoying a real flavour of Italy's culture, history and food. Sample the delights of Milan, Como and Verona en route to Venice.

ITINERARY

Day 1

Depart by Eurostar at lunchtime for the short journey to Paris. Stay 1 night in Paris close to Gare de Lyon.

Day 2

Leaving Paris mid-morning, travel by TGV service to Turin, arriving late afternoon. Stay 2 nights in Turin.

Day 3

Free day based in Turin. Turin lies on the River Po and was the seat of the Italian Parliament immediately after unification. It is also home to the FIAT company. The city has a wealth of architecture with its cathedral dating back to the 15th Century.

Day 4

Leaving Turin after breakfast a short journey using the Frecciarossa high speed train service will bring you to Milan, in the province of Lombardy for a 2-night stay. Milan is a stylish city renowned for its fashion designers and Opera House. Explore during the rest of the day using the metro or the vintage trams.

Day 5

A day trip north to Como, situated at the bottom of the lake of the same name. Take a stroll round the town or venture on to the lake on one of the numerous ferries.

Day 6

By rail after breakfast for the short journey to Verona, using the Frecciarossa high speed service. Verona is synonymous with Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet but it also has a wonderful Roman amphitheatre which hosts open-air opera and a compact old town district worth exploring. Overnight stay.

Day 7

Another short journey today of just over an hour will take you to Venice. We include a waterbus pass to allow you to explore the city and its famous landmarks - St Marks's Square with its Basilica and Campanile, the Rialto Bridge and much much more. Stay for 1 night.

Day 8

Morning departure by train travelling via Milan and Basel to Paris, arrriving early evening for an overnight stay.

Day 9

By Eurostar to London
