A combination of railway journeys and rambling (not too strenuous) in scenic Transylvania. Stay in family run “homestays” (en suite) and enjoy rural life in the company of a knowledgeable local guide.
ITINERARY
Day 1 – Flight to Cluj Napoca
Afternoon flight from London Heathrow for a late evening arrival in Cluj. Overnight hotel.
Day 2 – Turda Gorge
Following a brief stroll around Cluj, we take a short drive to Turda Gorge for an easy walk on a well marked path along the river. Continue to Rimetea, a traditional village in the Hungarian speaking part of the Western Carpathians. Evening meal included at our guest house.
Day 3 – Sezskely Rock
Walk along the base of the Piatra Secuiului (Sezskely Rock) through glorious mountain scenery to the next village of Colteşti – around two hours each way.
Day 4 – Ramet Monastery, Mediaş & Copşa Mare
We walk through pretty meadows to Ramet Monastery (3 hours), then transfer to Teius to catch the afternoon train to Mediaş. We stay for 2 nights with evening meal in the remote village of Copşa Mare with its typical Saxon architecture.
Day 5 – Biertan
The walk to Biertan is some two hours each way and here we find an impressive fortified church in typical Saxon style.
Day 6 – Malancrav & Sighişoara
Luggage will go by bus whilst we walk over rolling hills to Malancrav, another typical Saxon village with church and manor house. Short transfer to Sighişoara, a fortified citadel and UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as birthplace of Vlad the Impaler (Count Dracula). We continue by private coach to Crit, yet another beautiful Saxon village where we are assured of a warm welcome and an excellent dinner. We spend 2 nights here.
Day 7 – Viscri
This well preserved village has a UNESCO Heritage church and became famous when the former Prince of Wales, now King Charles, bought a small property in the main street. After the village visit, we have a 4-hour walk through meadows and woodland to Mesendorf. Our guest house will provide a packed lunch today.
Day 8 – Braşov & Magura
Drive to Braşov, an impressive well restored medieval city, for a look around. Afternoon train along the branch line to Zarneşti where our bus will meet us to drive into the mountains to Magura for a 2-night stay.
Day 9 – Zarneşti Gorge
An easy walk with packed lunch through stunning mountain scenery.
Day 10 – By Train Over the Carpathians
Transfer to Braşov for a main line train over the mountains to Bucharest for an overnight stay.
Day 11 – Bucharest to London
Airport train service to Otopeni Airport for flight to London Heathrow arriving mid-afternoon.
Due to the limited number of rooms in “homestay” accommodation, this tour will be limited to 12 persons.
